WE BUILD HOPE TOGETHER
Called by her passion to care for the poor, hungry, and downtrodden in society, April Benson founded The Dirt Road Project (TDRP) in 2017. A registered nurse by trade, April felt the calling to build an organization which would impact the lives of many living in Haiti.
TDRP began its journey in the rural mountains of the Central Plateau in Haiti and has continued to experience growth in the areas of healthcare, education, nutrition/agriculture, and housing. Each principle lends itself to sustainable opportunities for the Haitian people, ultimately providing gainful employment assisting in the sustaining of the family unit.
Over the past five years, TDRP has employed 10 Haitians, fed five families monthly through its MANNA Food Program (totaling of 37 individuals), educated 165 older adults and 95 elementary students through its ASPIRE and ALTITUDE instructional and scholarship programs, and provided healthcare to over 1200 people living in the community of Nan Citron through its HOPE Health Fair. The first home of the Village of Hope initiative was built for the Fleury family in June 2019, marking a momentous milestone for the organization and community!
Since its inception, TDRP has grown substantially, recently having purchased its first parcel of land in the community of Berou where its headquarters will be nicely positioned in the Nord region of Haiti. In addition, a wildly successful community garden program called SPROUT was begun in Nan Citron and has been able to provide employment and nutritious food for this most vulnerable community. A second community garden is planned on the new property as well as the building of permanent structures to house programs for the community, including a guesthouse in which teams traveling from the States will be able to stay during their visit to Haiti.
The possibilities are endless, so stay tuned for their unfolding!
