From humble beginnings
Called by her passion to care for the poor, hungry, and downtrodden in society, April Benson founded The Dirt Road Project (TDRP) in 2017. A registered nurse by trade, April felt the calling to build an organization which would impact the lives of many living in Haiti as well as in her own community of Rochester, NY.
TDRP began its journey in the rural mountains of the Central Plateau in Haiti and has continued to experience growth in the areas of healthcare, education, nutrition/agriculture, and housing. Each principle lends itself to sustainable opportunities for the Haitian people, ultimately providing gainful employment assisting in the sustaining of the family unit.
TDRP employs 10 Haitians, feeds four families, educates 65 older adults and 95 elementary students, instructs 10 students in the performing arts, and provides healthcare to over 400 people living in the community of Nan Citron on a yearly basis. The first home in the Village of Hope initiative was built for a family of six in June 2019, marking a momentous milestone for the organization and community!
Expansion into the Nord region of Haiti is expected in Fall 2019. This region will be host to TDRP headquarters, a guesthouse for medical teams, an urgent care clinic and mother/child wellness center, and an adult education center.
But, there's more ...
TDRP is bringing the Village of Hope to Rochester, NY. This intentional multifaceted community for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, older adults, medical students, single mothers, and victims of human trafficking will be first of its kind in Upstate NY and will feature many attractive opportunities for its residents as well as the community et large. These features include a holistic medical center, community center, coffee cafe, bakery, fair trade products, and so much more.
